Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin has clarified that her ministry does not plan to build a memorial at the site of the collapsed Highland Towers Condominium.Instead, she said the ministry only plans to beautify the place and turn it into a historical site to memorialise the tragedy on Dec 11, 1993, that killed 48 people.“The Highland Towers area needs to be given a new lease of life because social problems in the area have caused unease among local residents.“Thus, the demolition of the buildings that have been abandoned for 27 years would be beautified through the development of a historical site, which at the same time would ensure the welfare of residents in the Highland Towers area,” she said in a statement last night.
